I have to continually focus on protecting time for me to spend in the studio. Uninterrupted days that my entire focus can be on the batiks that are in process, or sketching and plotting out the next ones. Events, obligations, and people are a balancing act, and I often have to make tough choices on how I spend my time.
The unexpected sudden shutdown and isolation was a gift. I happily spent lots more time in my studio without any competition from the outside world! Revisiting old and new ideas that I’ve been intending to explore. I spent time musing on a haiku written by poet friend and collaborator of mine, Antoinette Libro.
Indigo ocean
an early moon hovers
between two worlds
I wanted to respond to it, yet felt stumped. I had never watched the moon come up from the watery horizon. So I visited the beach during the full moon twice so far, and plan to again. The range of visibility and reflections as the moon emerges over the horizon are fleeting, and like a snowflake, no two moments are the same. The experience of being alone on the darkening beach is so beautiful and peaceful. How could I have missed out on this experience? For now the transitions of night and day, water and earth have become the subjects of my current batiks. The first two are completed, with more in various stages. Inspiration finds us in unexpected ways.
Even though the world is opening back up, and calling loudly, I’m happy the quiet time allowed me to reach into new directions. I’ve heard a surprising number of other artists express those same experiences.
I have a summer of upcoming shows outside of St. Augustine, check below to see if any are in your area.
