2021 Fundamentals of Fine Art Batik Workshops

Fundamentals of Fine Art Batik
Learning the technique of creating fine art batik on cotton cloth. Participants will explore various tools and methods for building multiple layers of hot wax and dyes to cotton,  techniques for mixing dyes and dying fabrics. By class completion each participant will have finished several batiks.
Drawing skills are a plus but not necessary. Tracing an image is a valid technique.

My classes are limited to 8 students so there is plenty of individual attention as you learn the technique of creating fine art batiks on cotton cloth. Participants will explore various tools and methods for building multiple layers of hot wax and dyes to cotton,  techniques for mixing dyes and dying fabrics. By class completion each participant will have completed 3+ batiks, working from photographic images they have chosen and brought to class.

Students will learn the techniques and steps of applying multiple waxing and dying to complete complex batiks. I will provide lots of individual guidance to help each student learn how to plan out the sequence of steps of the batik at the beginning of the process.

Over the course of the week students will explore multiple techniques of
-how to layer dyes from light to dark
-how to over dye in order to create new unique colors
-Mixing and applying dyes by soaking or sponging.
-practice applying hot wax with a tjanting, brushes or splatter.
-how to create and control crackling
- learn multiple methods for removing wax from finished batiks

This workshop includes all the supplies you will need to create your batiks.

Drawing skills are a plus but not necessary. Tracing an image is a valid technique and a quicker approach for this class.
