Beauty in the Familiar

Twisting Live Oak Oak Branch
with Moss and Fungi 18 X 38”

Moccasin Branch Reflections
17 X 26”

Nature is the ultimate source of messy, surprising beauty. I can’t get enough of it. It inspires most of my work, and draws me outside to get deep into some wild place where I can feast my eyes on the contrasts of textures and the seeming confusion of plants and trees intermingling, competing and coexisting with each other.

These indigo experiments I began in January have had unexpected results. As I interpret these textures and relationships in shades of indigo, textures have become more exaggerated. The outcome surprises me, the absence of natural color creates an otherworldly place. I’ve delved into stronger contrasts and dark backgrounds. What was familiar becomes unfamiliar. I’m intrigued by the potential and shift in focus.

I think the viewer sees the images differently as well. I invite you to view these snippets of the natural world with fresher eyes, hopefully leading to a new appreciation for the rich diversity that surrounds us every day.
