The batiks on this page are some of the finished batiks from a 5 day workshop I taught at the Bascom: Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands, NC. I think they did wonderful work for beginning batik artists and wanted to showcase thier work. The next class at The Bascom is scheduled for June 26-30, 2017. Thank you Byron Tenesaca, Artist in Residence at the Bascom, for taking these photos.
I am tentatively planning a 5 day class sometime late February 2017 in St. Augustine. Check back for details or email me to notify you when the class is open for registration.
Fundamentals of Fine Art Batik
Learning the technique of creating fine art batik on cotton cloth. Participants will explore various tools and methods for building multiple layers of hot wax and dyes to cotton, techniques for mixing dyes and dying fabrics. By class completion each participant will have finished several batiks.
Drawing skills are a plus but not necessary. Tracing an image is a valid technique.
5 day workshop
By the end of the week participants will have completed 3+ batiks from photographic images they have chosen and brought to class.
Over the course of the week students can explore multiple techniques of
-how to layer dyes from light to dark
-how to over dye in order to create new unique colors
-Mixing and applying dyes by soaking or sponging.
-practice applying hot wax with a tjanting, brush or splatter.
-how to create and control crackling
- learn multiple methods for removing wax from finished batiks
